Catching an Early Morning Flight from Keflavík: Timing, Check-in and Transfers

Drive Reykjavik team · 5 min read

Many transatlantic and European departures from Iceland leave early in the morning, which means an early morning flight from Keflavík is something most visitors will face at some point. The drive is only about 49 km and 45 minutes, but the rest of the morning needs to be planned carefully, especially in winter.

This guide helps you work out when to wake up, when to leave Reykjavík and how to make sure your ride to the airport is one thing you do not need to worry about.

Count backwards from take-off

The easiest way to plan is to start with your departure time and subtract each step. Use this as a framework, then adjust it to your airline's advice:

  1. Departure time of your flight.
  2. Minus your airline's recommended arrival time at the airport. This is usually several hours before an international flight, so check the guidance on your ticket or the airline's website.
  3. Minus the drive from Reykjavík to Keflavík: about 45 minutes in normal conditions.
  4. Minus a safety buffer for weather, traffic or a late start. In winter, make that buffer generous.
  5. That is the time your car should leave your accommodation.

Getting to Keflavík very early

Public transport that works at midday may not work at 04:00. If you plan to take the airport bus, check carefully that a service departs at the right time and picks up from your hotel or from a stop you can reach easily with luggage. Check the operator's current timetable rather than assuming.

A taxi can be arranged, but you will want to confirm availability in advance for very early hours. The most dependable option is a pre-booked private transfer, because the car comes to your door at a time you choose.

Why a pre-booked transfer suits early departures

With a private airport transfer you set the pick-up time when you book, and the car arrives at your address. There is no timetable to match and no need to carry bags to a bus stop in the dark.

  • Fixed price per car, not per person, from 18,900 kr between Reykjavík and Keflavík
  • Economy (Tesla) for 1 to 4 passengers, Van (Mercedes Vito) for 5 to 7, minibus for 8 to 16 on request
  • Pay a 20% deposit online and the rest to the driver by card or cash
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up
  • WhatsApp support on +354 777 3949

Bookings need to be made at least 1 hour before pick-up, but for a very early flight, book at least a day ahead and confirm your pick-up time the evening before.

An example morning

Suppose your flight departs at 07:00 and your airline asks you to be at the airport about two and a half hours earlier. You would want to be at Keflavík at 04:30, which means leaving Reykjavík around 03:30 once you add the 45-minute drive and a small buffer. In winter, add more. That is a very short night, so pack the evening before and keep the morning simple. The numbers here are only an illustration, so always use your own airline's guidance.

Breakfast and check-out

Most hotels will not serve breakfast at 03:00. Ask your accommodation whether they can prepare a packed breakfast, or buy snacks the day before. Settle your bill and return keys the night before if you can, so check-out takes only a minute.

Allow for weather, especially in winter

The road between Reykjavík and Keflavík is a main highway, but it can still be affected by snow, ice and strong wind. In winter, build in extra time and check road conditions and the weather forecast on the official Icelandic road and weather services before you go to bed.

If conditions look poor, do not wait until the last minute to react. Message your driver or us on WhatsApp the evening before and agree whether an earlier pick-up makes sense. An extra half hour of buffer costs you very little sleep, while a missed flight costs far more.

Checklist for the night before

  • Pack and zip your luggage before you go to dinner.
  • Keep passport, boarding pass and phone charger in one place.
  • Confirm your pick-up time and address with your driver or booking.
  • Set two alarms.
  • Ask your accommodation about early check-out, breakfast boxes and key return.
