Arriving at Keflavík Airport: A Step-by-Step Guide from Gate to Car

Drive Reykjavik team · 5 min read

Landing in a new country after a long flight is much easier when you know what comes next. This Keflavík Airport arrival guide takes you through each step, from the aircraft door to the moment you sit in a car heading for Reykjavík, about 49 km and 45 minutes away.

Keflavík Airport (KEF) is compact compared with Europe's big hubs, so most arrivals are straightforward. The main thing to plan in advance is the last leg: how you get to your hotel. We will come to that at the end.

Before you land

A few small preparations save time later:

  • Keep your passport and boarding pass in an easy-to-reach pocket.
  • Have your hotel address and booking confirmation saved on your phone, ideally offline.
  • If you booked a transfer, save your booking code and your driver's contact details.
  • Check your own airline's requirements for travel documents and any entry forms before you fly.

Step by step: from gate to arrivals hall

1. Leaving the aircraft

Follow the signs for arrivals. Depending on where you flew from, you may walk through a corridor toward passport control or a baggage hall directly. Take your time; there is no need to rush to the front of the queue.

2. Passport control

Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Passengers arriving from outside Schengen show their passport at border control, while those arriving from another Schengen country usually pass through more quickly. Rules and queue lengths vary by flight and by the time of day, so allow some flexibility in your plans.

3. Baggage reclaim

Check the screens for your flight's belt number. Luggage trolleys are available in the hall. If a bag is missing or damaged, report it to your airline's desk before you leave the baggage area.

4. Customs and the arrivals hall

After baggage reclaim you pass customs and walk out into the arrivals hall. This is where drivers, friends and family wait. If your driver is meeting you, look for a name sign. If you are heading for a bus or taxi, follow the signs to the pick-up areas outside.

Meeting your driver in arrivals

With a pre-booked private transfer, your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. You do not need to find a taxi rank or work out which bus to catch. The driver helps you with your luggage and walks you to the car.

If something delays you, for example a long passport queue or a late bag, you are covered: we include 45 minutes of free waiting at the airport. If you are going to be later than that, message us on WhatsApp at +354 777 3949 and we will help.

Because the arrivals hall can be busy when several flights land together, it helps to agree on one simple plan in advance: if you cannot see your driver straight away, stay inside the arrivals hall near the exit and check your booking confirmation for contact details. Do not wander off to another part of the terminal.

Arriving late at night or very early

Many flights to Iceland land at unsociable hours. That is another good reason to pre-book your ride: scheduled buses may not match your arrival time, and you may not feel like comparing options at 5 a.m. With a booked transfer, the plan is already in place before you leave home.

The drive to Reykjavík

The road to the capital is Route 41, a mostly divided highway across the Reykjanes peninsula. It is lava field and moss for much of the way, and then the suburbs of Hafnarfjörður and Kópavogur appear before you reach the city. The drive normally takes around 45 minutes. In winter, snow, ice or wind can add time.

Practical tips for your first hour

  • Tap water in Iceland is safe to drink, so bring an empty bottle and refill it.
  • Cards are widely accepted, even for small purchases.
  • Plug sockets are the European two-pin type at 230 V; bring an adapter if needed.
  • Dress for changeable weather even if it looked calm when you took off.
  • Keep your phone charged; you will want it for photos on the drive.

One last thing: give yourself permission to take it slowly. Icelandic arrivals are usually relaxed, the road to Reykjavík is simple, and your first view of the lava fields from the car window is part of the experience. If you are staying in the city for a few days, you can plan sightseeing from there, for example a private Golden Circle tour once you have rested.
