About Landeyjahöfn and the drive
Landeyjahöfn is the mainland harbour for the Herjólfur ferry to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar). There is no town here, only the ferry terminal and a car park on the black sand coast, so getting to it without a car is the main challenge for travellers heading to Heimaey.
A private transfer takes you straight from the arrivals hall to the terminal. When you book, tell us your sailing, and we will time the trip so you arrive with a comfortable margin before departure. The same works in reverse: we can meet you at the terminal when the ferry comes back and drive you to the airport, Reykjavík or anywhere else. Please check the ferry operator's current timetable yourself and buy ferry tickets directly from them. In some sea conditions, especially in winter, the ferry sails to Þorlákshöfn instead of Landeyjahöfn; if that happens, contact us and we will change the pick-up or drop-off point.
The drive from Keflavík Airport runs along Reykjanesbraut towards Reykjavík, then east on Route 1 over Hellisheiði and through Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur. Shortly before Seljalandsfoss the driver turns south onto the road to the harbour, with the islands visible offshore on a clear day.
Seasons and roads
Winter weather can change ferry plans at short notice, including a switch to Þorlákshöfn. Check the operator's updates on the day of travel and message us if anything changes.
