About Stokkseyri and the drive
Stokkseyri is a small fishing village on the south coast, a few minutes east of Eyrarbakki, with a sea wall along the shore and calm lagoons and wetlands behind it. It was once an important rowing-boat fishing station, and that history is still visible in the village. Today it is a quiet place of old houses, low skies and wide sea views, and it is known for its seafood, above all the langoustine caught off this coast.
From Keflavík Airport the driver heads towards Reykjavík and takes Route 1 over Hellisheiði, past Hveragerði and into Selfoss, then turns south through the flat Flói farmland to the sea. It is a straightforward main-road trip, and the driver brings you to the door of your guesthouse, holiday home or farm. If your accommodation is outside the village, send the exact location or a map pin when booking so the driver can find it easily, even after dark.
Stokkseyri works well as a base for the south coast and the Golden Circle, and the dark coastline away from town lights is a good place to look for northern lights in winter. Walks along the shore towards Eyrarbakki are easy and flat, and in summer the lagoons behind the village are used for kayaking. Selfoss, close by, has supermarkets and other services.
Seasons and roads
Long winter nights on this coast are good for northern lights from roughly September to April (never guaranteed). Route 1 over Hellisheiði is open all year but can close briefly in storms.
