About Seljalandsfoss and the drive
Seljalandsfoss is the waterfall where you can walk behind the falling water. It drops over an old sea cliff right beside Route 1 at the turn-off to Þórsmörk, and a path loops around the back of it, so expect spray and bring a waterproof layer. A short walk north along the cliffs leads to Gljúfrabúi, a smaller waterfall partly hidden inside a narrow gorge.
As a transfer destination, Seljalandsfoss usually means the farms, guesthouses and cabins in the area around the falls, or a drop-off before you continue on a hike or another booking. The waterfall is also the natural first stop on a south coast trip, with Skógafoss further east and the Westman Islands ferry port at Landeyjahöfn close by.
From Keflavík Airport the driver follows Reykjanesbraut and then Route 1 the whole way: over Hellisheiði, through Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur, with the Eyjafjallajökull glacier coming into view ahead on clear days. You see the waterfall from the road well before you get there. If you have time, it is easy to agree a stop here on the way to accommodation further east.
Seasons and roads
In winter the path behind the waterfall is often icy and may be closed. Daylight around midwinter lasts only a few hours, so time your arrival accordingly.
