About Álftanes and the drive
Álftanes is a low, green peninsula on the south side of Skerjafjörður, across the water from central Reykjavík. It was its own municipality until it merged with Garðabær, and it still feels like a quiet village rather than a suburb: detached houses, open fields, coastal ponds and shoreline paths. Its best-known address is Bessastaðir, the official residence of the President of Iceland, with its white farmhouse and church standing alone on the shore.
The transfer is one of the simplest around the capital. From Keflavík Airport the driver follows Route 41 across the lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula to Hafnarfjörður, then turns off towards the coast and out along the road onto the peninsula. There is no need to cross Reykjavík, and the same road takes you back to the airport quickly for an early departure.
Visitors often stay in Álftanes in rented houses or with family, and it suits travellers who want space and quiet but still want the city close. Your driver takes you right to the door, and the price is fixed per car, not per person. The walks along the shore are popular with birdwatchers, and on clear days the views stretch across Faxaflói bay.
