About Reykjavík Domestic Airport and the drive
Iceland has two airports near the capital, and they are not connected. International flights land at Keflavík on the Reykjanes peninsula, while domestic flights to towns such as Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Ísafjörður leave from Reykjavík Domestic Airport (RKV), right next to the city centre in the Vatnsmýri area. Some flights to Greenland and the Faroe Islands also use RKV. If your trip combines an international arrival with a domestic flight, you need ground transport between the two.
A private transfer is the simplest way to make that connection. The driver meets you in the Keflavík arrivals hall, loads your bags and drives you along Route 41 to the domestic terminal, dropping you at the door. On separate tickets you will normally collect your luggage at Keflavík and check in again at RKV, so plan generously: allow for passport control, baggage reclaim, the drive itself and check-in. Leaving several hours between the two flights is sensible, and on winter days an even bigger buffer is wise.
The same works in reverse. Coming back from the north or east, you can be picked up at RKV and taken straight to Keflavík for your international departure, without going through the city.
Seasons and roads
Domestic flights are more sensitive to weather than international ones and can be delayed or cancelled in winter storms. Check with your airline on the day, and tell us early if your RKV flight time changes.
