About Seltjarnarnes and the drive
Seltjarnarnes is the small town on the western tip of the Reykjavík peninsula, its own municipality but joined seamlessly to the city's west end. It is mostly quiet residential streets, a seafront path and open coastline, which is exactly why visitors who rent an apartment or house here like it: you are a short ride from downtown, yet you can walk to the sea in minutes.
From Keflavík the route runs along Route 41 through the lava fields and the southern suburbs, then crosses Reykjavík to the far western edge, so it is one of the longer drives in the capital area. A private transfer takes you all the way to your address, which helps here, as many homes are on small residential streets rather than main roads.
The point of the peninsula ends at Grótta, a lighthouse on a little island that you can walk out to at low tide. It is a favourite spot for sunsets over Faxaflói bay and, because it lies away from most of the city lights, a common place for locals to watch for the northern lights on clear winter nights. There is also a small geothermal foot bath on the shore, where you can sit with warm feet and look out at the sea and Snæfellsjökull on a clear day.
