About Dalvík and the drive
Dalvík is a fishing town on the west shore of Eyjafjörður in North Iceland, with the mountains of Tröllaskagi rising straight behind it. It is a practical base for exploring the fjord: whale-watching trips sail from the area in season, the ferry to the island of Grímsey leaves from Dalvík harbour, and the ferry to Hrísey runs from nearby Árskógssandur. In winter there is skiing in the hills above town, and Akureyri is a short drive down the fjord.
From Keflavík Airport the route runs north on Route 1 through Reykjavík, past Borgarnes and over the Holtavörðuheiði and Öxnadalsheiði passes into Eyjafjörður, then up the western shore of the fjord to Dalvík. It is a long day, so plan proper breaks. Many travellers combine the drive with some sightseeing in the north-west; if you have stops in mind, agree them with us in advance on WhatsApp so the driver can plan the day.
If you would rather spend less time on the road, domestic flights from Reykjavík to Akureyri are an alternative, and we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport. Otherwise your driver brings you door to door to your accommodation in Dalvík or the farms around it. See our Akureyri travel guide for ideas in the area. Pick-up at Keflavík includes 45 minutes of free waiting after landing.
Seasons and roads
Holtavörðuheiði and Öxnadalsheiði are high passes that can close temporarily in winter storms, and in December the days in the north are very short. We check the forecast before every long winter drive and may advise changing the time or splitting the journey.
