About Sauðárkrókur and the drive
Sauðárkrókur is the main town of Skagafjörður, a broad fjord and valley in North Iceland known for horse breeding, rafting rivers and some of the country's best-preserved turf buildings. The town has a harbour, an old quarter of timber houses, a good range of services and a view out to the islands of Drangey and Málmey in the fjord. It is a convenient base for horse riding, for boat trips to Drangey in summer and for exploring the Tröllaskagi peninsula to the east.
Coming from Keflavík Airport, you head through Reykjavík and north on Route 1 past Borgarnes, over the Holtavörðuheiði pass and through Blönduós, then leave the ring road at Varmahlíð and follow Route 75 north along the valley to the coast. Just off this road is Glaumbær, a turf farmhouse museum that is one of the easiest historic stops in the north.
It is a long transfer, so after an overnight flight expect to arrive tired and plan the first evening accordingly. Your driver takes you door to door to your hotel, guesthouse or farm stay anywhere in Skagafjörður.
Seasons and roads
The Holtavörðuheiði pass on Route 1 can be closed temporarily in winter storms, and December daylight in the north is very short. We will contact you if the weather calls for a different time.
