About Ólafsfjörður and the drive
Ólafsfjörður is a small fishing town on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland, set at the head of a short fjord and ringed by steep mountains. Together with Siglufjörður it forms the municipality of Fjallabyggð, and the two towns are linked by the Héðinsfjörður tunnels. It is a quiet base for hiking in summer and for skiing, including cross-country skiing, in winter, and a peaceful place to watch the light over the open sea to the north.
From Keflavík Airport the journey follows Route 1 north through Reykjavík, past Borgarnes and over the Holtavörðuheiði pass. Your driver then either heads on towards Eyjafjörður and comes up the coast past Dalvík, or follows the Skagafjörður coast round to Siglufjörður and through the tunnels, depending on the season and the road conditions on the day. Either way it is a long day in the car, so plan proper breaks; if you would like to stop somewhere specific on the way, agree it with us in advance on WhatsApp.
Some travellers fly from Reykjavík to Akureyri instead and continue from there; we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport if you choose that option. Otherwise your driver brings you door to door to your hotel, guesthouse or cabin in Ólafsfjörður. Our Akureyri travel guide covers more of the region. The same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Seasons and roads
Tröllaskagi gets a lot of snow, and in winter the high passes on Route 1 and the exposed coastal roads on the peninsula can close temporarily in storms or because of avalanche risk. Daylight is very short around December. We check the forecast before every long winter drive and may suggest a different time, route or day.
