Golden Circle · from KEF
About Gullfoss and the drive
Gullfoss, the "golden falls", is where the glacial river Hvítá drops in two steps into a deep, narrow canyon. It is the furthest point of the classic Golden Circle and one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland, with viewing paths above and beside the falls and a café at the top car park.
Gullfoss is not a village, so a transfer here usually means one of two things: you are staying at one of the hotels or cabins in the area, or you want to see the falls between landing and checking in further along. Either way, tell us exactly where you are going so the driver can plan the day properly.
The road from Keflavík Airport passes Reykjavík on Reykjanesbraut and then climbs over Hellisheiði on Route 1. After Hveragerði the driver turns onto Route 35, which runs past Kerið crater, the greenhouses of Reykholt and the Geysir hot spring area before reaching the falls. The alternative goes north of the capital through Þingvellir National Park. In practice, a trip to Gullfoss takes you past most of the Golden Circle, and you can add stops if you agree them with us beforehand. North of Gullfoss the road becomes the Kjölur highland route, which is a summer-only road.
Seasons and roads
The road to Gullfoss is open all year, but the lower viewing path can be closed in icy conditions in winter. The highland road north of the falls (Kjölur) is closed in winter.
