Golden Circle · from KEF
About Geysir and the drive
Geysir is the geothermal area in Haukadalur that gave its name to geysers everywhere. The Great Geysir itself now erupts only rarely, but its neighbour Strokkur shoots a column of boiling water into the air every few minutes, surrounded by steaming vents, mud pots and coloured hot springs.
Plenty of travellers stay right here, in the hotels and cabins around Haukadalur, so they can see Strokkur early in the morning or in the evening when the coach groups have gone. Gullfoss is only a few minutes further up the road, and the village of Reykholt and Flúðir are close by.
From Keflavík Airport your driver can take either half of the Golden Circle in reverse. The southern way crosses Hellisheiði on Route 1, then follows Route 35 past Kerið crater and through farmland to Haukadalur. The northern way goes around Reykjavík to Þingvellir and on via Laugarvatn. If you have just landed and want a short look at a sight before checking in, mention which one when you book, and we will plan the route and the extra time together. Otherwise you go directly to your accommodation, door to door.
Seasons and roads
Both routes are kept open in winter, but ice and wind are common from November to March, so the driver may prefer one road over the other on the day. The geothermal area paths can be icy in winter too.
