About Reykholt (Golden Circle) and the drive
Reykholt in Biskupstungur is a small geothermal village in Bláskógabyggð, in the farming country between Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. Hot water is everywhere here: steam rises from the hot spring in the village, and the greenhouses glow at night. The best known of them is Friðheimar, where tomatoes are grown all year under lights and visitors come to eat among the plants. Not to be confused with Reykholt in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland, which is a different village.
From Keflavík Airport the driver heads to the edge of Reykjavík and follows Route 1 over Hellisheiði and down past Hveragerði to Selfoss. There the road turns north on Route 35, passing the Kerið crater lake, into the Biskupstungur district. Stops along the way, such as a supermarket in Selfoss, can be added if you agree them with us in advance.
Staying in Reykholt puts you in the middle of the Golden Circle, with Geysir and Gullfoss up the road and the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir close by. Many visitors rent a summer house or cabin in the area, often a few kilometres out of the village; the driver takes you to the door. Read more in our Golden Circle guide.
Seasons and roads
In winter the roads in the Golden Circle area can be icy and Hellisheiði sometimes closes briefly in storms; the driver adjusts the route and timing to the conditions. Dark rural skies make the area good for northern lights from roughly September to April (never guaranteed).
