About Flúðir and the drive
Flúðir is a geothermal farming village in the southern part of the Golden Circle area. Hot water from the ground heats the greenhouses that grow a large share of Iceland's vegetables and mushrooms, and you will see steam rising from the fields as you drive in.
Most visitors know the village for the Secret Lagoon, a natural hot pool on the edge of Flúðir that was turned into one of Iceland's first swimming pools in the late 19th century. Small hot springs bubble around the pool and a little geyser erupts nearby. Flúðir also has hotels, guesthouses and summer houses, and it is well placed for days out to Geysir, Gullfoss and the south coast.
The transfer from Keflavík Airport goes along Reykjanesbraut, around Reykjavík and over Hellisheiði on Route 1 to Selfoss. From there the driver either continues east and turns north on Route 30, or takes Route 35 past Kerið and through the greenhouse area around Reykholt. Both are paved and quiet, with views of open farmland and, on clear days, glaciers on the horizon. If you would like to arrive and go straight to the Secret Lagoon after your flight, we can drop you at the pool instead of your hotel.
Seasons and roads
In winter the dark countryside around Flúðir is a good place to watch for northern lights from roughly September to April, though they are never guaranteed. Hellisheiði can close briefly in storms, in which case the driver uses the Þrengsli road.
