First Time in Iceland? 20 Questions Travellers Ask (Answered)
Drive Reykjavik team · 5 min read · August 2026

If this is your first time in Iceland, it is normal to have a long list of questions. How do you get from the airport? Do you need cash? Is it safe to drive? We hear the same questions again and again, so we collected 20 of them here, grouped by topic, with plain answers.
Where rules or prices can change, we say so and point you to the official source. For our own services you will find exact details on our FAQ page.
First time in Iceland: before you go
1. Do I need a visa?
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Whether you need a visa or a travel authorisation depends on your nationality, and the rules can change. Check the official government sources for your passport before you book.
2. When is the best time to visit?
It depends on what you want. Summer has long days and open roads, winter offers northern lights chances and snowy scenery, and spring and autumn sit in between. Our guides to Iceland in winter and Iceland in summer help you choose.
3. How many days do I need?
Three to five days is enough for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast. A week lets you slow down. See our 3-day itinerary for a starting point.
4. What should I pack?
Layers, a waterproof outer shell, sturdy shoes and a swimsuit for geothermal pools. Our packing checklist covers every season.

Landing and getting to Reykjavík
5. How far is the airport from Reykjavík?
Keflavík Airport (KEF) is about 49 km from Reykjavík, roughly 45 minutes by road in normal conditions. Snow or wind can make it longer.
6. What are my options to reach the city?
A scheduled bus, a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. We compare them in our guide to every way from Keflavík to Reykjavík.
7. How does a private transfer work?
Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and takes you to your address. The price is fixed per car, one way, and you get 45 minutes of free waiting at the airport. Add your flight number when you book.
8. What if my flight is late?
Add your flight number when you book and message us on WhatsApp at +354 777 3949 if your plans change. The 45 minutes of free waiting at the airport are there to cover normal delays such as slow baggage.
Money, language and safety
9. What currency is used?
The Icelandic króna (ISK). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, so you rarely need cash. See money and tipping in Iceland.
10. Do I need to tip?
No. Service is normally included and tipping is not expected.
11. Do people speak English?
Yes, English is widely spoken, especially in Reykjavík and in tourism.
12. Is the tap water safe?
Yes. Tap water is safe to drink, so bring a refillable bottle.
13. Is Iceland safe?
Day to day, yes. The main risks come from nature: weather, waves on beaches, ice and slippery paths. Respect warnings, and call 112 in an emergency.
Getting around and seeing the sights
14. Do I need to rent a car?
Not necessarily. Many visitors prefer a transfer plus day trips with a driver, particularly in winter. Read about getting around without a car.
15. What is the Golden Circle?
A classic route to Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall. Our Golden Circle guide explains each stop.
16. How do private tours work?
You get your own driver and your group only, with flexible timing and stops. Prices are per car, not per person. Browse our private tours or message us on WhatsApp.
Weather and nature
17. Can I be sure of seeing the northern lights?
No. They need darkness, clear skies and solar activity, so they can never be guaranteed. They are possible in the dark months; see our northern lights guide.
18. How changeable is the weather?
Very. Wind, rain and sun can all appear in one day, so dress in layers and check the forecast each morning.
19. Should I visit the Blue Lagoon?
Many first-timers do, and it is close to the airport. Book in advance and read our Blue Lagoon timing guide.
20. Can I cancel or change a booking with you?
Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before pick-up, with a full refund. For changes, message us on WhatsApp.
