About Blönduós and the drive
Blönduós is a small town on Route 1 in North-west Iceland, built on both banks of the glacial river Blanda where it meets the open bay of Húnaflói. It is a service centre for the surrounding farming district, with a swimming pool, shops, a petrol station and a handful of places to stay. Visitors pass through on the way between Reykjavík and Akureyri, and many stop for the Textile Museum, the river mouth with its birdlife, and the small island of Hrútey in the river, linked to the bank by a footbridge.
The drive from Keflavík Airport is a proper journey north: through Reykjavík, under Hvalfjörður, past Borgarnes and up over the Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass before dropping into the green valleys of Húnaþing. Along the way you pass Grábrók, an old crater right next to Route 1, a good place to stretch your legs. Plan on at least one break for food and coffee.
Blönduós suits travellers visiting family or friends in the district, staying on a farm or starting a trip around the Vatnsnes peninsula. Give us the address and your driver will take you to the door, whether in town or out in the countryside.
Seasons and roads
Holtavörðuheiði is a high mountain pass and can close temporarily in winter storms. If a closure looks likely we will contact you to move the pick-up time or the date.
