About Djúpivogur and the drive
Djúpivogur is a small harbour village in the south of the East Fjords, on a rocky point at the mouth of Berufjörður. Above it rises Búlandstindur, a pyramid-shaped mountain that is the landmark of the area. The village was Iceland's first member of the Cittaslow network of slow-living towns, and its old merchant house, Langabúð, still stands by the harbour. Along the shore of Gleðivík bay is a row of large stone eggs, a sculpture work by artist Sigurður Guðmundsson.
This is one of our longest transfers. From Keflavík Airport the driver follows Route 1 east along the whole south coast, past Selfoss, Hvolsvöllur and Vík, across the sands of Mýrdalssandur and Skeiðarársandur, past the glaciers of Vatnajökull and Jökulsárlón, through Höfn and on into the fjords. It is a full day on the road, and the scenery changes all the way.
Because the drive passes so many sights, many travellers want a few short stops on the way, such as a waterfall or the glacier lagoon. That is possible if you agree the stops with us in advance on WhatsApp, so the extra time can be planned. Read our ring road planning guide if Djúpivogur is part of a longer trip around the country.
Seasons and roads
Winter daylight is short and the south and east coast roads can be closed for a time by storms or ice, especially on the open sands and in the fjords. In winter we plan this transfer around the weather and may advise on timing; there is no guarantee every stop will be possible.
