About Höfn and the drive
Höfn í Hornafirði is the main town of south-east Iceland, a working fishing harbour on a spit of land with views across the lagoon to the glacier tongues of Vatnajökull. It is known around the country for langoustine, which turns up on most restaurant menus, and it makes a practical base for exploring the glacier lagoons to the west and the mountains of Vestrahorn to the east.
This is the longest of our south coast transfers: Route 1 all the way from Reykjavík past Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. Realistically it fills a whole day, and after an overnight flight that is a lot to take on in one go. Some travellers break the trip with a night on the way; others turn it into a slow sightseeing day with stops at the waterfalls and the lagoon. Höfn also has a small domestic airport, so if you would rather fly part of the way, check the airline's current schedule.
Wherever you are staying in or around town, your driver brings you door to door, and the same fixed price applies when you head back to Keflavík.
Seasons and roads
Winter brings very few daylight hours and storms along the exposed coast between Vík and Höfn. We keep an eye on the forecast and may suggest splitting the journey or changing the departure time.
