About Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the drive
Kirkjubæjarklaustur, usually shortened to Klaustur, is a small village on Route 1 east of Vík, where the south coast farmland gives way to wide lava fields and glacial sands. It has a handful of hotels and guesthouses, a petrol station and a shop, which makes it a common overnight stop for travellers heading towards Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, or for anyone who wants to see Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon without the crowds of a day trip.
The drive from Keflavík Airport follows the whole south coast: past Selfoss and Hvolsvöllur, under the waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, through Vík and then across Eldhraun, a vast moss-covered lava field. It is a long journey, so plan on comfort and food breaks along the way, and be realistic about how much you want to see on arrival day after an overnight flight. Many people go straight through and save the sights for the days ahead.
Your driver collects you in the arrivals hall and takes you door to door to your accommodation in or around the village. If you would like a longer stop somewhere, such as a walk at Skógafoss or lunch in Vík, agree it with us before the day so the timing works.
Seasons and roads
In midwinter there are only a few hours of daylight, so a large part of this drive happens in the dark, and the coast east of Vík is exposed to strong winds. In stormy weather we may suggest adjusting the pick-up time or breaking the journey.
