About Reyðarfjörður and the drive
Reyðarfjörður is a town at the head of the longest fjord in East Iceland, and part of the Fjarðabyggð municipality together with Eskifjörður, Neskaupstaður and Fáskrúðsfjörður. It grew up as a trading and fishing place, was home to Allied troops during the Second World War, and today is also known for the large aluminium smelter on the fjord. It makes a central base for the Eastfjords, with Egilsstaðir and the neighbouring fjord towns all close by.
From Keflavík Airport it is a full day's drive or more, one of the longest transfers in the country. Your driver plans the route by the season and the road conditions, with proper breaks for meals and rest along the way. Many travellers make it a sightseeing day, with waterfalls, black beaches or glaciers on the way; agree any stops with us in advance on WhatsApp so the day can be planned properly. Some prefer to split the trip with a night on the way.
Another option is a domestic flight from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir, which is a short drive from Reyðarfjörður; we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport if you choose that. Otherwise your driver brings you door to door to your accommodation or workplace in town. Our Ring Road planning guide helps with timing. The same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Seasons and roads
The drive to the East is long and crosses mountain passes and exposed stretches that can close temporarily in winter storms. Days are very short around December. Your driver chooses the route by the season and the conditions on the day, and we may suggest a different time or splitting the journey.
