About Egilsstaðir and the drive
Egilsstaðir is the largest town in East Iceland and the region's main service centre, set on the banks of the long Lagarfljót lake. It is a crossroads for the whole of the east: the fjord towns, Seyðisfjörður and the highlands are all within reach. Close by are Hallormsstaðaskógur, one of Iceland's largest forests, the tall Hengifoss waterfall with its red-striped cliffs, and the floating geothermal pools of Vök Baths on Urriðavatn.
Egilsstaðir is about as far from Keflavík Airport as you can go on the Ring Road, so this is a full day's drive or more. Your driver plans the route by the season and the road conditions, with proper breaks for meals and rest. Many travellers turn the journey into a sightseeing day, with waterfalls or glaciers on the way; agree any stops with us in advance on WhatsApp. Some prefer to split the trip with a night on the way.
Egilsstaðir also has a domestic airport with flights from Reykjavík, and some travellers compare the two options; we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport if you decide to fly. If you prefer the road, your driver brings you door to door to your hotel, guesthouse or farm stay. Our Ring Road planning guide helps with the bigger picture. The same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Seasons and roads
Winter driving to the East means long distances, mountain passes and exposed stretches that can close temporarily in storms, and very short days around December. Your driver chooses the route by the season and the conditions on the day; we check the forecast before every long trip and may suggest a different time or splitting the journey.
