About Fáskrúðsfjörður and the drive
Fáskrúðsfjörður is a fishing village in the Eastfjords with a strong French connection. From the nineteenth century into the early twentieth, French fishing fleets worked the waters off East Iceland and used the fjord as a base; the restored French hospital now houses a museum about them, and the street signs in the village are in both Icelandic and French. At the mouth of the fjord lies the island of Skrúður, home to large seabird colonies.
From Keflavík Airport this is a full day's drive or more. Your driver plans the route by the season and the road conditions, with proper breaks for meals and rest. Many travellers make a sightseeing day of it, with waterfalls, black beaches or glaciers on the way; agree any stops with us in advance on WhatsApp. If you land after an overnight flight, consider splitting the trip with a night somewhere along the way.
Some travellers compare the drive with a domestic flight from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir, the nearest airport; we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport if you decide to fly. Otherwise your driver brings you door to door to your accommodation in Fáskrúðsfjörður. Our Ring Road planning guide helps with the rest of your trip. The same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Seasons and roads
The long drive to the East crosses mountain passes and exposed coastal stretches that can close temporarily in winter storms, and in December daylight is very short. Your driver chooses the route by the season and the conditions on the day; we check the forecast before every long trip and may suggest a different time or splitting the journey.
