About Eskifjörður and the drive
Eskifjörður is a fishing town on a short side fjord off Reyðarfjörður in East Iceland, overlooked by the jagged peak of Hólmatindur across the water. Its old timber harbour buildings include the East Iceland Maritime Museum, and nearby is Helgustaðanáma, the historic mine once famous for Iceland spar, the clear calcite crystal. In winter the Oddsskarð ski area is in the mountains between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður.
From Keflavík Airport it is a full day's drive or more, one of the longest transfers we do. Your driver plans the route by the season and the road conditions and builds in proper breaks for meals and rest. Many travellers combine the journey with sightseeing, such as waterfalls or glaciers on the way; agree any stops with us in advance on WhatsApp. If you are arriving on an overnight flight, it is worth thinking about splitting the trip with a night on the way.
Some travellers compare the drive with a domestic flight from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir, the nearest airport; we can take you from Keflavík to Reykjavík's domestic airport if you choose to fly. Otherwise your driver takes you door to door to your accommodation in Eskifjörður. Our Ring Road planning guide helps you plan the bigger trip. The same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Seasons and roads
The long drive to the East crosses mountain passes and exposed stretches that can close temporarily in winter storms, and days are very short around December. Your driver chooses the route by the season and the conditions on the day; we check the forecast before every long trip and may suggest a different time or splitting the journey.
