A Romantic Honeymoon in Iceland: Ideas and Itinerary
Drive Reykjavik team · 5 min read · September 2026

A honeymoon in Iceland offers something rare: dramatic landscapes close together, warm water to relax in and the feeling of being a long way from everyday life. It is also easy to overplan. The best honeymoon itineraries leave room for slow mornings, long dinners and the occasional change of plan.
This guide gives you romantic ideas, a relaxed five-day itinerary, advice on when to go and practical tips for travelling comfortably as a couple.
When to go for a honeymoon
The right season depends on the experience you want. Both ends of the year have their own romance, and the shoulder seasons can be a good balance.
- Summer: long daylight, green landscapes and relaxed road trips. You get far more hours for sightseeing, which is useful if you want to see a lot.
- Autumn and spring: a mix of daylight and darkness, often with fewer crowds and a chance of northern lights in the darker months.
- Winter: snow, short days and the possibility of northern lights. It is cosy and atmospheric but needs more flexibility around weather and road conditions.
Northern lights are never guaranteed, even in the dark season, so treat them as a beautiful bonus. Our northern lights guide explains what affects your chances. If you are weighing up a winter honeymoon, read what to expect in Iceland in winter.

A relaxed five-day honeymoon itinerary
This outline blends the classics with plenty of downtime. Adjust it to your dates, and remember that days can shift with weather.
Day 1: Arrive and settle in
After a long flight, the easiest start is a driver waiting in arrivals. Your driver meets you with a name sign and takes you to your hotel in Reykjavík, roughly 45 minutes away. Enjoy a calm dinner and an early night; there is plenty to see tomorrow.
Day 2: The Golden Circle with a soak
Spend the day at Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, and add a hot spring in the evening. See the Golden Circle guide for the route, and our guide to hot springs in Iceland for ideas on a romantic soak.
Day 3: The South Coast
Waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, and the black sand beach near Vík, make this a favourite. Our South Coast day trip guide shows the stops. Stay well back from the waves on black sand beaches, because sneaker waves can be dangerous.

Day 4: A slower day in Reykjavík
Sleep in, then explore the city on foot: the harbour, cafés, galleries and Hallgrímskirkja church. Book a special dinner. Check current opening hours and reservation requirements for restaurants and museums.
Day 5: Spa and departure
If your flight allows it, a final soak before heading to Keflavík Airport is a lovely way to end the trip. Count back from your check-in time and leave a generous margin; our Blue Lagoon timing guide shows how.
Romantic ideas beyond the itinerary
- Book a private tour so you can set your own pace, with no group and no waiting for others.
- Plan an evening outing for northern lights in the dark months, while accepting that it may not happen.
- Visit a geothermal pool at the quietest time of day for a calmer atmosphere.
- Have a long dinner at a local restaurant and try Icelandic specialities.
- Add a morning at a lake, waterfall or lighthouse that you can reach early.
Pacing and packing
Pacing matters more than ticking off sights. Plan one main outing a day, leave the afternoon open and keep at least one slow morning. A honeymoon is the one trip where an unplanned hour in a hot spring or a café is the whole point. Distances look short on the map, but stops, photographs and weather add up quickly.
Pack in layers with a waterproof outer shell, comfortable walking shoes and a swimsuit for geothermal pools; our packing checklist covers each season. If you want to plan the budget at the same time, read our realistic Iceland trip budget guide.
Travel comfortably: skip the driving
Many couples prefer not to spend their honeymoon behind a steering wheel, especially in winter. A private driver means one of you is not the designated driver, and you can both enjoy the scenery. Our private tours are with your own driver, for your group only, and the price is per car, not per person. Message us on WhatsApp at +354 777 3949 to ask what we can arrange for your dates.
For your airport transfer, the price is fixed per car, one way. KEF to Reykjavík starts from 18,900 kr in our Economy (Tesla), which takes 1 to 4 passengers. You pay a 20% deposit online and the rest to your driver by card or cash, and free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before pick-up. Add your flight number when you book.
