West & Snæfellsnes · from KEF
About Hellissandur and the drive
Hellissandur is a small village near the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, on the north coast just beyond Rif and Ólafsvík. Snæfellsjökull rises behind it, and Snæfellsjökull National Park begins just outside the village, so lava fields, craters and wild beaches are all within a short drive. Hellissandur is quiet, with a few guesthouses and holiday homes, and many walls in the village are decorated with large murals, which makes a stroll around the streets a pleasant way to spend an evening.
From Keflavík Airport the drive goes through Reykjavík, north on Route 1 under Hvalfjörður to Borgarnes, then west on Route 54 along the south side of Snæfellsnes. The last part of the journey either crosses the mountains to Ólafsvík or follows the coast around the tip of the peninsula past Arnarstapi and the national park. Your driver chooses the route that suits the weather on the day.
Staying in Hellissandur puts you right at the edge of the national park, ideal for walks around the glacier and early or late light along the coast. Your driver takes you to the door of your guesthouse or holiday home. For ideas on what to see, read our Snæfellsnes peninsula day trip guide or look at the Snæfellsnes tour.
Seasons and roads
Both routes to the tip of Snæfellsnes can be snowy and windy in winter; the mountain road may close for a while in storms and the coast is exposed to strong gusts. Daylight is short in midwinter. If a storm is forecast we will contact you about the timing.
