About Stykkishólmur and the drive
Stykkishólmur is the largest town on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, a harbour on the north coast looking out over Breiðafjörður and its countless small islands. Its old centre of colourful timber houses curves around the harbour, and a short climb up the basalt island of Súgandisey, joined to the town by a causeway, gives you the classic view over the bay. The Baldur ferry sails from here across Breiðafjörður to the Westfjords, calling at Flatey island; check the operator's current schedule if you plan to connect.
From Keflavík Airport the drive heads through Reykjavík, north on Route 1 under Hvalfjörður to Borgarnes, then west on Route 54 along the southern side of the peninsula before crossing the mountains to the north coast. The last part of the route gives you your first look at the islands of Breiðafjörður.
Stykkishólmur is a good base for the Snæfellsnes peninsula: Kirkjufell and Grundarfjörður are a short drive west. Your driver takes you door to door, whether you are staying in a hotel in town, a guesthouse by the harbour or a farm outside.
Seasons and roads
The mountain road across the peninsula can be snowy and windy in winter and may close for a while in bad storms. If a storm is forecast we will contact you about the timing.
