About Húsafell and the drive
Húsafell is a small settlement surrounded by birch woodland at the top of the Borgarfjörður valleys, with lava fields and the glaciers Eiríksjökull and Langjökull on the skyline. There is a hotel, holiday cottages, a campsite and a swimming pool, and it is the usual base for trips onto Langjökull: several operators run glacier and ice tunnel tours that start in the Húsafell area, so check your operator's meeting point when you book.
The route from Keflavík Airport goes through Reykjavík and north on Route 1 via the Hvalfjörður tunnel to Borgarnes, then turns inland up the valley through Reykholt, where the medieval writer Snorri Sturluson lived. The final stretch passes Hraunfossar, where streams of clear water pour out of the lava into the Hvítá river, and Barnafoss just beside it. If you would like a short stop there, ask when booking.
Húsafell is a quiet place, especially out of season, so the drive works well for anyone heading straight from a night flight to a cottage in the woods. Your driver takes you right to your accommodation, wherever it is in the area.
Seasons and roads
The valley road to Húsafell is paved and kept open in winter, but it can be icy and the area gets real snow. Short winter days also mean a dark arrival if you land in the afternoon.
