About Búðardalur and the drive
Búðardalur is the main village of the Dalir district in West Iceland, set on the shore of Hvammsfjörður, an inner arm of Breiðafjörður. It is a quiet farming community with a shop, a swimming pool and a few places to stay, surrounded by green valleys that play a large part in the sagas. Laxdæla saga is set in these dales, and nearby Haukadalur is linked to Eiríkur the Red and his son Leifur Eiríksson, the explorer who sailed to North America around the year 1000.
From Keflavík Airport the drive goes through Reykjavík, north on Route 1 under Hvalfjörður and past Borgarnes, then up the Norðurárdalur valley. Shortly after the old crater of Grábrók you leave Route 1 for Route 60, which climbs over the Brattabrekka pass and drops down into the Dalir valleys. It is a scenic drive with plenty of room for a coffee stop on the way, and it works well even straight off an overnight flight.
Búðardalur suits travellers visiting family in the district, staying on a farm in the dales or starting a slower trip towards the Westfjords. Your driver takes you to the door of your accommodation, in the village or out in the countryside, if you give us the address when booking. Read more about the region in our Borgarnes and West Iceland guide.
Seasons and roads
Route 60 crosses the Brattabrekka pass, which can be snowy and windy in winter and may close for a while in storms. Daylight is short in December and January. If the forecast looks bad we will contact you about the pick-up time or the date.
