About Bifröst and the drive
Bifröst is a small university village on Route 1 in Norðurárdalur, the valley that climbs north from Borgarfjörður in West Iceland. It grew up around Bifröst University and sits in a striking landscape: a mossy lava field, birch scrub, the lake Hreðavatn just to the west, and the neat cone of the Grábrók crater right beside the main road. It is a quiet place, with walking paths through the lava straight from the village.
From Keflavík Airport the driver heads to Reykjavík, follows Route 1 north around Mount Esja, goes under Hvalfjörður through the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel and continues to Borgarnes. From there the road runs inland up the valley to Bifröst. Borgarnes is the obvious place for a short stop for groceries or fuel, if you agree it with us in advance.
Visitors stay around Bifröst in hotels, cottages and summer houses, which makes it a peaceful base for West Iceland. Reykholt, Hraunfossar and Húsafell are within reach to the east, and Snæfellsnes is a day trip away. Your driver takes you to the door, including cabins along the valley if you send the exact location. Read more in our Borgarnes and West Iceland guide.
Seasons and roads
Route 1 through Norðurárdalur is open all year, but in winter the valley and the higher road north of it can be icy and windy. The driver plans the drive to the conditions on the day.
