About Borgarnes and the drive
Borgarnes sits on a narrow headland in Borgarfjörður, where Route 1 crosses the fjord on a long bridge beneath the slopes of Hafnarfjall. It is the service town of West Iceland and a natural crossroads: Route 1 continues north towards Akureyri, Route 54 heads out to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and the valleys inland lead to Reykholt, Hraunfossar and Húsafell. The town's best-known attraction is the Settlement Centre, which tells the story of Iceland's first settlers and of Egil's Saga, much of which is set in this district.
From Keflavík Airport you drive to Reykjavík, follow Route 1 north around Mount Esja and pass under Hvalfjörður through the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel, then continue along the coast below Hafnarfjall to the bridge into town. It is a comfortable drive even on arrival day.
Many travellers stay in or around Borgarnes as a base for exploring the west, or as a first night before heading further north. Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, guesthouse or cottage, including farm stays outside town if you give us the address. Read more in our Borgarnes and West Iceland guide.
