About Hvammsvík and the drive
Hvammsvík is a set of natural geothermal pools right on the shore of Hvalfjörður, the long fjord north of Reykjavík. Some pools sit at the water's edge and change with the tide, so you soak in hot water while looking straight out over the fjord and the mountains opposite. It is a calmer, more rural alternative to the big lagoons, and a popular first or last stop on an Iceland trip. Entry is booked with the hot springs directly, so reserve your slot before you arrange the transfer.
Rather than taking the tunnel under the fjord like most traffic heading north, the drive from Keflavík Airport leaves Route 1 after Mount Esja and follows Route 47, the old road along the southern shore of Hvalfjörður. It is a quiet, scenic stretch with farms, beaches and steep hillsides, and Hvammsvík lies part of the way along it.
We can take you there straight from your flight and on to Reykjavík or your accommodation afterwards, but the time at the springs needs to be agreed in advance. Our Hvammsvík Hot Springs private tour is an easy way to arrange a visit with return transport from Reykjavík.
Seasons and roads
The fjord road is open all year, but it is quieter and can be icy in winter. Soaking in the hot pools on a dark winter evening is popular, and on clear nights between roughly September and April there is a chance of northern lights, never guaranteed.
