About Akranes and the drive
Akranes is a fishing and harbour town on the tip of a peninsula across the bay from Reykjavík, with the flat-topped mountain Akrafjall rising behind it. Visitors come for its two lighthouses on Breiðin point, the long sandy beach at Langisandur and the Guðlaug bathing pool built into the sea wall above it. It is also a quieter place to stay than the capital while still being within easy reach of it, and a good starting point for the west of Iceland.
From Keflavík Airport the road runs along Reykjanesbraut to the edge of Reykjavík, then north on Route 1 around the foot of Mount Esja and under Hvalfjörður through the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel. Just after the tunnel you turn west onto Route 51 for the last short stretch into town. It is one of the shorter transfers outside the capital area, so it works well straight after landing, even after a night flight.
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you directly to your hotel, guesthouse or the address you are visiting in Akranes. Travelling with family and lots of bags? The van seats up to seven.
